Feminism is a very important thing. The most important thing about it, however, is that every individual woman is in charge of her own definition of feminism and decides what it means to be female. Men and women, regardless of age, orientation, or gender identity must respect the way she identifies herself as a woman. You do not need to like it. You do not need to be attracted to her. You need to respect her and the way she presents herself. You need to allow her to feel comfortable in her skin, whether or not the way she presents herself is in alignment with your picture of an ideal woman. It’s not okay to tell a woman that she is a bad mother/unfeminine for having a career rather than being a stay at home mom or not having children or not marrying. It’s equally unacceptable to tell a woman she is a failure for abandoning work to be a stay at home mom or housewife. And if you care about a woman, don’t let that care be based solely on her ability to appear “feminine”. Gender identity is extremely important, but there is more to our souls.
And it should go without saying, but the same idea applies to all people. Men included.
